An electric toothbrush is a toothbrush that uses electric power supplied usually by a battery to move the brush head rapidly. They are usually one of two types. They either vibrate side to side, for example Philips Sonicare or they rotate in one direction and then the other, such as Oral B. When using vibrating toothbrushes a “normal” brushing technique should be used. With rotating brushes it is necessary to simply move the brush from tooth to tooth as shown on this animation.
Angle the bristles at 45 degrees to the gum line. There’s no need to scrub – hold the brush in position and after a few seconds sweep the bristles away from the gum. Repeat around the outer and inner surfaces of all teeth. This tecnique is particularly effective inter-dentally. The whole procedure should take about 2 minutes.
