Enamel is a hard, protective layer that helps your teeth deal with everything you put them through. Tooth sensitivity occurs when the enamel that protects our teeth gets thinner, or when gum recession occurs, exposing the underlying root surface.
If hot, cold, sweet or very acidic foods, drinks, or breathing in cold air, makes your teeth or a tooth sensitive or painful, then you may have sensitive teeth.
Sensitive tooth may be caused by:
- Hard tooth brushing: You might be taking off more than just plaque,
- Soda, sticky candy, high-sugar carbs, all of these treats attack enamel,
- Tooth decay: when dentin which is the tooth layer under the enamel is exposed, sensitivity will appear,
- Gum disease and gum recession, the exposure of the root of the teeth generate sensitivity
- Clenching and grinding your teeth together at night can cause the enamel of the teeth to be worn away,
- Sensitivity after procedures such as fillings, crown and tooth bleaching.
To take care of your enamel and prevent the dental sensitivity
- Don’t brush too hard and use fluoride toothpaste to reinforce your enamel
- Use toothpaste for sensitive teeth
- Use of fluoride gel
- Avoid acidic drinks and food
Brush and floss twice a day to help keep your smile bright and pain-free. And see your dentist for a checkup twice a year.
